Social apps 'harvest smartphone contacts'

"Twitter has admitted copying entire address books from smartphones and storing the data on its servers, often without customers' knowledge. Access to the address book is enabled when users click on the "Find Friends" feature on smartphone apps. Two US congressmen have written to Apple asking why the firm allows the practice on its iPhone, as it contravenes app developer guidelines.

Critics say Apple should not approve apps that copy user data, according to the company's own policies

Twitter has said it will update its privacy policy to be more explicit. The practice came to light when an app developer in Singapore, Arun Thampi, noticed that his contacts had been copied from his iPhone address book without his consent by a social network called Path. Dave Morin, CEO of Path, apologised and said Path would ask users to opt in to share their contact information.

However, he noted separately that it was an "industry best practice" to upload or import address book information. iPhone apps by social sites including Facebook, FourSquare, Instagram, Foodspotting and Yelp are also reported to access the address book."

Shame on Europe for betraying Greece by William Wall

Capitalism is triumphant as EU states sacrifice the Greek people in a desperate attempt to appease the gods of speculation.

The behaviour of the EU states towards Greece is inexplicable in the terms in which the EU defines itself. It is, first and foremost, a failure of solidarity.

The "austerity package", as the newspapers like to call it, seeks to impose on Greece terms that no people can accept. Even now the schools are running out of books. There were 40% cuts in the public health budget in 2010 – I can't find the present figure. Greece's EU "partners" are demanding a 32% cut in the minimum wage for those under 25, a 22% cut for the over 25s. Already unemployment for 15-24-year-olds is 48% – it will have risen considerably since then. Overall unemployment has increased to over 20%. The sacking of public sector workers will add to it. The recession predicted to follow the imposition of the package will cause unbearable levels of unemployment at every level.

In addition the "package" demands cuts to pensions and public service pay, wholesale privatisation of state assets – a fire-sale, since the global market is close to rock bottom – and cuts to public services including health, social welfare and education. The whole to be supervised by people other than the Greeks. An entire disciplinary and punishment system.

When we casually use a term like "bailout", it is important to remember that it is not people who are being bailed out, or at least not the Greek people. The bailout will not save a single Greek life. The opposite is the case. What is being "bailed out" is the global financial system, including the banks, hedge funds and pension funds of the other EU member states, and it is the Greek people who are being ordered to pay – in money, time, physical pain, hopelessness and missed educational opportunities. The relatively neutral, even stoic, term "austerity", is a gross insult to the Greek people. This is not austerity; at best it is callousness.

On top of this callousness, we must remember that the strategy itself is nonsense. Every intelligent observer is agreed that cuts do not produce growth. The highest rate of growth in the EU at present is in Poland where massive public investment is driving the economy. GDP is declining or barely moving among the "austerity" nations, including the UK.

In essence, this crisis is a failure of the EU states to show solidarity in the face of an onslaught from the financial markets. At first glance this seems to be a very simple fight. In one corner you have nation states, which have the wellbeing of their citizens as their raison d'être; in the other you have global capitalism as represented by the financial markets, which has the wealth of a tiny few as its raison d'être. But the nation state has, for a considerable time, identified itself with those same markets. States have agreed to see themselves as economies rather than societies. More recently we have been led to believe that the market alone can provide everything the citizen needs and much more efficiently than the structures that the citizens normally rely on and which they have, over generations, erected as protections against the revenge of the market.

It is pitch black, icy cold and the pressure is phenomenal. The deepest parts of the ocean are some of the least hospitable places on Earth - yet footage from recent expeditions reveals that life in the oceanic trenches is thriving...

Our fascination with the deepest of the deep was sparked by an extraordinarily dangerous expedition that took place 50 years ago. On 23 January, 1960, the bathyscaphe Trieste propelled Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh to the bottom of Challenger Deep in the Marianas Trench, which at more than 10,900m (35,800ft) down is the deepest spot in the ocean. They were the first - and even now, the only - humans to have experienced these depths.

With the vessel creaking and groaning under an immense 1,100 bars of pressure - the equivalent of having several dozen jumbo jets piled on top of you, the explorers stayed at the bottom for 20 minutes before they began their risky ascent back to the surface.

But as they neared the ocean floor, instead of finding a barren desert, devoid of life, the explorers say they spotted a fish swimming past.

Captain Don Walsh told the BBC: "The flatfish was seen just before we landed and the water clarity was still good.

"I would guess that it was less than a metre away. Jacques was at the viewport and I was looking at our fathometer calling off our height above the bottom when he saw the bottom and the fish."

The sighting suggested that even this most remote spot was habitable - and the hunt was now on for life in this mysterious underwater world.

National Libraries Day 2012

"Children's Laureate Julia Donaldson has written a poem in protest at planned library closures.

The Gruffalo author, who was awarded the MBE last year, has written the poem to mark National Libraries Day (Saturday 4 February) and the 62-year-old writer, who was born in London but lives in Glasgow, said she wanted to make a serious point in a fun way.

Donaldson has used libraries since she was a child and still visits her local branch to research and write her best-selling books. Her poem describes libraries as places to "meet your heroes, old and new, from William the Conqueror to Winnie the Pooh".

A campaign against library cuts has been running since last February's Save Our Libraries Day; and protests and legal action have helped stave off some of the plans for mass closures. In the past 12 months, 32 UK libraries have closed and 43 mobile libraries have also shut down butPublic Libraries News lists 407 libraries as being at risk of closure."

Idling and marine growth addressed in new clause

A new standard clause to deal with removal of marine growth caused by vessels lying idle over a prolonged period is currently being developed by BIMCO. The aim is to draft a clause that makes a fair apportionment of costs and responsibilities in the event a vessel spends a disproportionate amount of time idle while awaiting charterers’ orders.

Over the past years vessels have been prone to encounter longer periods of inactivity, partly as a consequence of a decrease in goods to be transported as well as the current over-supply of trading vessels. These circumstances have triggered an increase in disputes relating to underperformance of the vessel and overconsumption of bunkers caused by the vessel’s bottom being fouled – disputes that could have been avoided if owners and charterers had agreed beforehand on how to deal with bottom fouling and cleaning following prolonged idling on charterers’ orders.

The clause will address bottom fouling issues under a time charter party, in particular who arranges and pays for inspection of the vessel’s underwater parts and subsequent cleaning, if necessary. The drafting group will also consider potential responsibilities if the vessel’s anti-fouling system is damaged as a result of the bottom being cleaned; off-hire, including cleaning of the hull fouled under a previous charter party; and appropriate damages/compensation to owners if the vessel is redelivered without being cleaned.

The specialist Working Group, appointed to undertake the task of developing this clause, met in London recently to begin the drafting work. The group includes representatives from F. Laeisz, Cargill, the Chamber of Shipping of the UK and Marine Coatings. It is expected that a first draft will be ready to be reviewed by BIMCO’s Documentary Committee in April 2012.

Shipbuilders face up to a bleak future

Spare a thought for the shipyards. Amid all the hand-wringing and soul-searching by ship owners bemoaning their terrible lot, there have been fewer analyses of the prospects for shipyards, or indeed their performance in recent years.Such a task has been completed by Paul Millbank of Steel Business Briefing in an Insight Paper which makes for interesting, if fairly depressing, reading. SBB examines the issue from the point of view of impact on the steel industry and given its findings, there is limited cheer for either buyers or suppliers.

Vessel deliveries are thought to have achieved an all-time peak of about 160m DWT in 2011, though if deliveries are viewed on a compensated gross tonnes basis, Millbank reckons the market peaked in 2010. Either way, going forward both measures look set to show a marked decline in the coming years. Data on delivered tonnage shows that China has enjoyed top producer status for the last two years, followed by South Korea and Japan.

In 2011 these three accounted for close to 95% of world shipyard cgt deliveries, according to data from Clarkson Research Services. China overtook long-time leader South Korea in deliveries in 2010, having passed Japan the previous year but it is worth recalling that less than 10 years ago China’s output was below that of Europe. Clarksons reports that Chinese shipbuilders delivered over 1,000 vessels for the second year in succession – the largest ever by one nation in a single year. 2011 was a top year for Korea’s shipbuilders – the first time they delivered more than 50m DWT in a year.

Elsewhere, the picture is far less rosy, with Europe’s modest output declining for the third year in a row and the even smaller US shipbuilding sector is as Millbank puts it “bumping along the bottom” – its 2011 deliveries a fraction of Europe’s.

Annual Forecast 2012

There are periods when the international system undergoes radical shifts in a short time. The last such period was 1989-1991. During that time, the Soviet empire collapsed. The Japanese economic miracle ended. The Maastricht Treaty creating contemporary Europe was signed. Tiananmen Square defined China as a market economy dominated by an unchallenged Communist Party, and so on. Fundamental components of the international system shifted radically, changing the rules for the next 20 years.

We are in a similar cycle, one that began in 2008 and is still playing out. In this period, the European Union has stopped functioning as it did five years ago and has yet to see its new form defined. China has moved into a difficult social and economic phase, with the global recession severely affecting its export-oriented economy and its products increasingly uncompetitive due to inflation. The U.S. withdrawal from Iraq has created opportunities for an Iranian assertion of power that could change the balance of power in the region. The simultaneous shifts in Europe, China and the Middle East open the door to a new international framework replacing the one created in 1989-1991.

Our forecast for 2012 is framed by the idea that we are in the midst of what we might call a generational shift in the way the world works. The processes are still under way, and we will therefore have to consider the future of Europe, China and the Middle East in some detail before drawing a conclusion. The 2012 forecast is unique in that it is not a forecast for one year in a succession of years, all basically framed by the same realities. Rather, it is a year in which the individual forecasts point to a new generational reality and a redefinition of how the world works.

2012 may not be the conclusion of this transformative process. Neither was 1991 the conclusion. However, just as 1991 was the year in which it became clear that the old world of the Cold War no longer functioned, 2012 is the year in which it will become clear that the Post-Cold War world has come to an end, being replaced by changed players and changed dynamics.

Dry bulk market in dire situation

The dry bulk market has been suffering gravely at the start of 2012, with January proving to be a "hellish" month so far and the worst part of it is that with China's week long holiday closing in, things are about to get even worse before they start improving. Yesterday, the BDI (Baltic Dry Index), the industry's benchmark was down by yet another 4.93%, ending the session at just 926 points. The index hadn't seen three digits since Lehman's collapse back in 2008, when, as a result, global trade was brought to a halt, as a result of the absence of bank guarantees for cargoes. The Capesize market lost another 2.94% yesterday, while the Panamax one was down by 4.82%.

In its latest report, commenting on the Capesize market, shipbroker Fearnleys said that "the collapse is complete as earnings for this segment have come down to below operating expenses, at which resistance is finally felt. A free w-o-w fall of some 40% has turned into leveling out at a daily average of no more than USD 7k. Industry disruptions due to weather conditions in both Brazil and Australia are partly blamed, but the single most important reason for the present misere remains tonnage oversupply - including a number of January2012-deliveries.Despite a spot market being very dull and without direction, certain players still pick period tonnage. Latest conclusions include 180kdwt/blt 2012 ex Imabari yard 12th Jan at USD 12,500 for 4-6 months, also 170kdwt/blt 2004 delivering China sh Jan for 11-13 months at USD 13k" said Fearnleys ... read more here ...

World IPv6 launch day set to aid net address switchover

Leading internet firms have set 6 June as the World IPv6 launch day.IPv6 is the new net address system that replaces the current protocol IPv4, which is about to run out of spaces to allocate.

Web companies participating in the event have pledged to enable IPv6 on their main websites from that date.The Internet Society, which made the announcement, said the day represented "a major milestone" in the deployment of the standard.Facebook, Google, Microsoft Bing and Yahoo are the inaugural web firms involved.

Future-proof

Every device connected to the internet is assigned an internet protocol (IP) address, which is a string of numbers that allows other devices to recognise where data comes from or should be sent to.

The IPv4 system has approximately four billion IP addresses.

The growth in the number of smartphones, PCs and other web devices and services meant that net regulator Icann had already handed out its last IPv4 sets to regional registries.

At the time it said businesses needed to start preparing themselves for a switch to the IPv6 standard, which offers more than 340 trillion trillion trillion addresses.

To put that number in context BBC Future Media blogged last year that if "every man, woman and child on Earth had a billion devices each with an IPv6 address, you haven't even come close to scratching the surface of the number of addresses available".

Experts say the new system should ensure there are enough addresses for the foreseeable future.

Vale yet to sell huge iron ore cargo in China-traders

Brazilian miner Vale has not yet sold its first mega iron ore cargo delivered to China two weeks ago, and has instead stored the material near a port for now, traders said on Wednesday.The 388,000-deadweight-tonne vessel Berge Everest, which carried 350,000 tonnes of iron ore, unloaded at China's Dalian port in late December, ending months of delays in getting the world's biggest dry bulk ships into China."It was discharged into a bonded warehouse in Dalian," said an iron ore broker in Singapore. "From Vale's point of view, it's not particularly wise to sell right now given the lacklustre demand from Chinese mills.""There's a lot of material in bonded warehouses across the coast at the moment because of the demand situation," he said.

Vale may be waiting for Chinese demand to pick up, possibly after the week-long Lunar New Year break in late January, before selling the cargo, traders said.The world's biggest iron ore miner, hoping to slash shipping costs to China by using a new fleet of mega dry bulk carriers, was not planning to sell the maiden cargo from Berge Everest immediately, said an iron ore trader in Hong Kong.Vale, which sells about 40 percent of its ore to China, is counting on a fleet of 35 Valemaxes to cut shipping costs and better compete with Australian rivals BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto."Vale just wanted to show its Chinese clients that its vessel can berth in China," he said, adding the cargo is likely to be sold into the spot market, instead of to a single buyer on a long-term contract."We're quite sure it's not sold yet. It should be put in the spot market, we're quite confident," said the Hong Kong trader, who sells iron ore to mills in mainland China.

Dry Bulk Market crashing at the start of the year

The dry bulk market has kept being on freefall mode yesterday, with the industry's benchmark, the BDI (Baltic Dry Index) losing a massive 5.17% on the day and ending the session down to just 1,193 points, which is almost half of where it stood during the final weeks of 2011. Leading the plunge was the Capesize sector which yesterday lost 5.82%, with the BCI (Baltic Capesize Index) ending down by 5.82%, while Panamaxes were also heavily hit, falling by an additional 4.26%.

In its latest weekly report, Fearnleys said on the Capesize market that "history repeats itself - with the new year starting with lack of cargoes and too many ships, just like the beginning of year 2011. We have seen some activity on the West Australia/China route but rates have been dropping and time being around mid 8´s. Now the activity x W.Australia is basically stopped due to cyclone. For the fronthaul, bids/offers are presently USD 21 against 22 and the short period market is dead, with FFA values suggesting these rates are in the lower 10,000s dly which does not make sense for most owners" said the shipbroker.

Reading the "Caleb's Crossing" by Geraldin Brooks

Recently I set out for an imaginary journey by leafing through Geraldine Brooks' novel the "Caleb's Crossing". Even though I haven't made a great progress in my reading, I could give you a hint of what the story is about. The storyline takes place in 1665, where a young native from Martha's Vineyard became the first Native American to graduate from Harvard College. By putting together a few events that have remained alive all these years, Geraldine Brooks' story brinks into being an amazing tale of love, magic and adventure.

To be honest at the beginning the story did not entirely grab my attention; however, as the it goes on, it turns into a luminous narrative. While reading the book, I have picked up a few phrases that caught my attention, so learners of English can use them and enrich their vocabulary as well. I will keep updating the collection during my reading.

Another habit to get into is to start endorsing others often and thoughtfully. It is something that has helped me a great deal to make my follower count and especially retweet rate jump significantly.

The way this works best I believe is through retweeting the best links form your stream with a short comment. Of course instead of retweeting you can also do the same with posts including the authors name.

Orangutans 'could video chat' between zoos via iPads

Orangutans at a Milwaukee zoo could soon be video-calling their primate friends via tablet computers.

The hairy tech fans have been playing with iPads since they were first introduced to them in May.

Conservationist Richard Zimmerman said the next step would be to provide wi-fi access - meaning the apes could watch orangutans in other zoos.

He hopes the experiment will raise awareness and funds to support the wild animals facing extinction.

Mr Zimmerman, from the US-based charity Orangutan Outreach, said he had wanted to give the device to the animals ever since it was launched back in January 2010.

"The original idea came literally when Steve Jobs gave his opening presentation introducing the iPad," he said.

"Independently, one of our supporters in Milwaukee was at the zoo showing the orangutan his iPad, and they were fascinated by it. We started to put things together."

What are "conflict diamonds" ?

(CNN) -- A major international environmental group has pulled out of the process to guarantee that diamonds do not come from conflict zones, saying the Kimberley Process had refused "to evolve and address the clear links between diamonds, violence and tyranny." So why are so-called "conflict diamonds" so controversial?

What are conflict diamonds?

Conflict or "blood" diamonds are illegally traded to fund conflict in war-torn areas, particularly in central and western Africa, according to the World Diamond council, which represents the commercial diamond trade.

The United Nations defines conflict diamonds as "...diamonds that originate from areas controlled by forces or factions opposed to legitimate and internationally recognized governments, and are used to fund military action in opposition to those governments, or in contravention of the decisions of the Security Council."

They are generally in "rough" form, meaning they have recently been extracted and not yet cut.

At the height of the civil war in Sierra Leone, it is estimated that conflict diamonds represented approximately four percent of the world's diamond production.

Who suffers?

Apart from the innocent people caught up in the conflicts that the trade fuels, thousands of men, women and children in countries such as Sierra Leone are used as slaves to extract diamonds. They are often forced to use primitive, back-breaking methods such as digging into mud or gravel along river banks with their bare hands. The collected material is then separated using hand-held sieves.

Is Maritime Piracy in Retreat, or just Marking Time ?

Piracy is not a modern phenomenon. 2078 years ago Rome was in panic because pirates based in Crete were threatening Rome’s food supplies shipped from Egypt and North Africa. They were so worried that General Pompey was given 20 legions and 500 ships to solve the problem, which he did in just three months. It just proves what you can do with enough political commitment.Plenty of Pirates? Over the last three years an average of three ships per month has been captured (see bars in the chart). But the incidence of these attacks has been almost as volatile as bulk carrier earnings. There was a peak in November 2008 when 10 ships were captured, but the average thereafter to June 2010 was 2½ per month. Few ships avoided capture when attacked; between January 2008 to June 2010 71 ships were captured and 28 escaped.

More Work, No More Pay

But, in the last 18 months, the pattern has changed. Between July 2010 and November 2011 a total of 272 ships reported pirate attacks (16 per month), but only 45 were captured, around 2½/month on average. The pirates ended up working much harder for the same results (or maybe the reporting of unsuccessful attacks has improved). At the same time the number of ships released (the line in the chart) has now drawn 50% above the captures and the pirates now hold only 11 ships, down from 26 in March 2011. That is excellent news, offsetting the increase in ransoms, now running at around $4m, and less than half as many crew members being held as six months ago.

Tough on Pirates

There is also anecdotal evidence that pirates are finding life harder, especially in Somalia. Despite, or perhaps because of, the enormous revenue generated, pirates are not welcome in Somali communities where some aspects of their lifestyle (drugs, prostitution etc) are not welcomed by local population. As a result the number of safe havens is shrinking. Meanwhile the prosecution of pirates goes on, and according to BIMCO over 1000 are "behind bars" (though generally the boatmen, not the organisers). And a gap is opening up between ships released and captured, suggesting that maybe the industry’s initiatives to protect vessels are beginning to work. All of which is encouraging. But unfortunately the four years’ data in the chart still suggests that, allowing for the volatility, the trend in vessel captures is still around an average of 3 ships a month.

Walk the Plank

So, there you have it. Piracy may not be nice, but it’s part of shipping’s maritime heritage. With two thirds of the fleet under "flags of convenience" and governments with Navies struggling with budget cuts, there is not much chance of emulating ancient Rome and sending 20 legions and 500 ships to sort out the problem. Although the pirates are clearly feeling the pressure, it’s too soon to start talking of victory. Have a nice day...

Mayans never predicted world to end in 2012: experts

"So say Mayan experts who want to dispel any belief that the ancient Mayans predicted a world apocalypse next year.

The Mayan calendar marks the end of a 5,126 year old cycle around December 12, 2012 which should bring the return of Bolon Yokte, a Mayan god associated with war and creation.

Author Jose Arguelles called the date "the ending of time as we know it" in a 1987 book that spawned an army of Mayan theorists, whose speculations on a cataclysmic end abound online. But specialists meeting at this ancient Mayan city in southern Mexico say it merely marks the termination of one period of creation and the beginning of another.

"We have to be clear about this. There is no prophecy for 2012," said Erik Velasquez, an etchings specialist at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). "It's a marketing fallacy."

The National Institute of Anthropological History in Mexico has been trying to quell the barrage of forecasters predicting the apocalypse. "The West's messianic thinking has distorted the world view of ancient civilizations like the Mayans," the institute said in a statement.

In the Mayan calendar, the long calendar count begins in 3,114 BC and is divided into roughly 394-year periods called Baktuns. Mayans held the number 13 sacred and the 13th Baktun ends next year.

Sven Gronemeyer, a researcher of Mayan codes from La Trobe University in Australia, who has been trying to decode the calendar, said the so-called end day reflects a transition from one era to the next in which Bolon Yokte returns.

"Because Bolon Yokte was already present at the day of creation ... it just seemed natural for the Mayan that Bolon Yokte will again be present," he said.

Of the approximately 15,000 registered glyphic texts found in different parts of what was then the Mayan empire, only two mention 2012, the Institute said."

"The Maya did not think about humanity, global warming or predict the poles would fuse together," said Alfonso Ladena, a professor from the Complutense University of Madrid. "We project our worries on them."

Autumn DC meeting brings new contracts and clauses

At the Autumn meeting of the BIMCO Documentary Committee (DC) held in Copenhagen on 10 November two contracts and four clauses were adopted.The newly revised edition of the SALEFORM agreement for the sale and purchase of second-hand ships was approved for publication. The new version will be called SALEFORM 2012 and will be published along with detailed explanatory notes this coming January.

The revision of this widely used international agreement has been a year in the making. The final draft follows a series of industry consultations that took place in Oslo, London and Singapore in September and October which drew large numbers of participants and an equally large number of useful comments and suggestions. SALEFORM 2012 reflects what the industry has told BIMCO it wants in a new edition of the sale agreement. It is a modest revision, but one which incorporates many of the amendments commonly made to the form when used. As such it provides an up to date contract for the industry, bringing greater clarity to those provisions in the 1993 edition which occasionally led to uncertainty.

The other contract adopted by the DC was a new Time Charter Guarantee Contract. The Guarantee is intended to be provided by a parent company of a charterer to guarantee payments, such as hire, under a time charter agreement. BIMCO is aware of an increasing demand for such guarantees and is sure that it will be well-received by the industry.

"In the lawsuit, filed in April, Apple accuses Samsung of "slavishly" ripping off its designs for the iPad and iPhone. Although there is worldwide interest in the case, the proceedings have largely been shrouded behind a veil of secrecy: most of the court papers are sealed, meaning they can't be viewed by the public.

Filing documents under seal has become almost standard procedure in many intellectual-property cases -- like Apple versus Samsung -- as companies claim their trade secrets and confidential information could come out during litigation. Judges have surprisingly wide latitude in deciding what should be kept under wraps and what shouldn't.

Some courts, like the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, where the case is being heard, have rules requiring that judges specifically sign off on every request to seal a document -- but these rules set no deadline.

In the Apple/Samsung case, some secrecy requests have languished for months while investors, academics and tech bloggers struggled to piece together whatever bits of information were available.

In every instance that she did issue a ruling on a sealing motion, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose granted the request. Just this week she approved six more motions to seal. Samsung's most crucial legal brief became available after months of delay -- and then only in redacted form."

New Suite of Bunker Clause Launched

BIMCO has just published a Special Circular with six new time charter party clauses in the form of a “suite” specifically designed to supplement the bunker provisions of many standard forms. The Bunker Suite provides clauses covering matters relating to delivery/redelivery bunkers; bunkering operations; sampling; fuel testing programmes; and ECA trading, all of which are matters that are frequently absent from or insufficient in many standard time charter parties.

Many older time charter forms contain bunker clauses covering the fundamental principles under the charter, but simply do not contemplate today’s situation where vessels are required to carry and use several grades of fuel and where sampling and testing regimes are an integral part of the process.

BIMCO’s Suite of Bunker Clauses is not intended as a direct replacement for the existing bunker clauses in a time charter - there is, for example, no intention to deal with the actual pricing or quantities of bunkers, as this will already be dealt with. Each clause within the Suite is designed to be self-standing and independent of the other clauses in the Suite – so users are free to “pick and mix” to suit their own needs.

Explanatory notes and a copy of the Suite of Bunker Clauses can be found in Special Circular No, 4 dated 4 November 2011 (see below). The Clauses may also be downloaded free of charge from the Clauses section of BIMCO’s website and from the Clause Manager of idea.

Slow Steaming Clause gets final polish

A new time charter clause for slow and super slow steaming will be published shortly by BIMCO. The clause was adopted by the Documentary Committee in November subject to the drafting team conducting a pre-publication review of some of the key features of the clause. The team met in London on 30 November and made a number of improvements to the layout and structure of the clause. The clause will now be circulated to all Documentary Committee members before being published by Special Circular along with explanatory notes later this month.

The Clause deals with a number of potentially difficult technical and legal issues as it is designed to cover all types of ships and trades from the container to the bulk sector. The technical aspects have been resolved and clarified with the assistance of engine designers Wartsila and MAN Diesel.

Two types of slow steaming are contemplated by the Clause: Slow steaming down to a level which would not require the owners to make any modifications to the engine – basically the cut-out point for the engines auxiliary blowers; and, should the owners and charterers agree that the vessel can slow steam to a greater degree, then an additional optional provision is given to deal with “ultra” slow steaming – which will apply only in a few cases.

In all cases the master retains the right to refuse to slow steam as the right of the charterers to order slow steaming is subject to the obligations of the master in respect of the safety of the vessel, crew and cargo. The Clause also distinguishes between liner and tramp trades to the extent that in scheduled liner trades due despatch obligations do not generally apply under bills of lading – therefore the final two provisions of the Clause which deal with due despatch obligations do not apply in the liner trades.Having completed the time charter Slow Steaming Clause, the Working Group has now turned its attention to voyage charters and is developing a virtual arrival clause. A first draft should be ready to be reviewed by the Documentary Committee in April next year.

"An Indelible Impression"

Well, I think it's time to answer your question Christina. Sorry for my delayed response but the obligation to attend seminars really distracted me. I couldn't help but take part in them. So, let's move on to the point. What struck me most was the writer's train of thought and the way he puts his ideas over the reader. The problem is that I have to quote the whole book in order to completely cover your question. Just joking :-). I have just found one.

"What's the world's greatest lie?" ... "It's this: that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what's happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That's the world's greatest lie." I am very much in favour of that view. Let me explain why. Nothing in this world is predetermined and therefore inevitable. It is clear that every action produces either positive or negative results. So, our deeds as well as our choices could conceivably end up well or badly. Who knows ... The only indication of a forthcoming result is a percentage, small or large depending on the prevailing circumstances, of success or failure. We have to think our chances through and decide accordingly. This means that we have to put an end to our fatalistic behaviour and take the bull by the horns instead of being passive waiting our fate.

It's worth mentioning another interesting quotation about how Coelho contemplates on "destiny". He states that " It's what you have always wanted to accomplish. Everyone, when they are young, knows what their destiny is. At that point in their lives, everything is clear and everything is possible. They are not afraid to dream, and to yearn for everything they would like to see happen to them in their lives. But, as time passes, a mysterious force begins to convince them that it will be impossible for them to realise their destiny." I will not completely agree with that. It's true that when we are young we are not afraid to dream, fall in love and suck every moment of our life. "As the time passes" we cross the borders from youth to maturity.

As I see it the "mysterious force" is the maturity; however, this doesn't mean that we will stop dreaming or prevent ourselves from achieving our destiny. Needless to say that throughout our lives everyone experiences different situations which may well change the way one thinks about the life. On the whole, it seems to me that this doesn't constitute a fence that deters us from accomplishing our destiny. "The closer one gets to realising his destiny, the more that destiny becomes his true reason for being...There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure."

Furthermore, one of the book's characters, I think the King of Salem, claims that "In order to find the treasure, you will have to follow the omens. God has prepared a path for everyone to follow.You just have to read the omens that he left for you." The experiences which we will gain throughout our live they will contribute at the interpretation of the "omens" so as to make our own decisions and reach our targets. One may ask how these omens look like. Personally I feel that they have many "faces". Simply consider these words "You must always know what it is that you want." Only then will you fulfil your destiny.

I will finish this post by quoting the following lines:

"Everything on earth is being continuously transformed, because the earth is alive ... and it has a soul. We are part of that soul, so we rarely recognise that it is working for us ... Never stop dreaming ... Follow the omens... Everything in life is an omen .... when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it."

That's the very meaning of this fascinating story.

During his long trip at the desert he stopped off at an oasis where "...he learned the most important part of the language that all the world spoke - the language that everyone on earth was capable of understanding in their heart..." He fell in love with a beautiful Arabian girl named Fatima who encouraged him to continue towards his goal. She explained to Santiago that the omens brought him to her, so she was a part of his destiny and that she would wait for his return.

"Maritime pirates of the past were able to successfully execute a mission by means of simple armed robbery. When this technique became more prominent and recognizable, ships consequently became more aware of the piracy danger and likewise armed themselves with the necessary weapons for self-defense. In the modern era, success via mere armed robbery is unlikely; in light of the upsurge in piracy, crew members are increasingly on the alert for potential threats, and the increased presence of naval forces acts as a piracy deterrent. For this reason, pirates must now organize more covert and aggressive operations, such as hijacking. This is the case of a piracy incident that occurred the evening of October 8, 2011 off the coast of Nigeria, 90 nautical miles from Lagos. 2 Pirates boarded and hijacked an oil tanker and remained on board, trapping crew members with them. This strategy placed an enormous amount of power in the hands of the pirates. They could maintain control of the tanker in order to freely transport the oil to a desired location, use the hostage crew members to gain ransom money, or simply steal the oil and other valuables on board. It turns out that no one can imagine what's really coming in our lives. We can plan, and do what we enjoy, but we can't expect our plans to work out. Some of them might, while most probably won't. Inventions and ideas will appear, and events will occur, that we could never foresee. That's neither bad nor good, but it is real.

I think and hope that's what my daughters can take from my disease and death. And that my wonderful, amazing wife Airdrie can see too. Not that they could die any day, but that they should pursue what they enjoy, and what stimulates their minds, as much as possible—so they can be ready for opportunities, as well as not disappointed when things go sideways, as they inevitably do.

He pushed open this door, as he had been told to do, and found himself in a tiny room, which contained no furniture but a plain kitchen table, a rocking-chair, and an ordinary chair. On one of the dirty buff-coloured walls were a couple of shelves, containing in all perhaps a dozen bottles and jars. An old man sat in the rocking-chair, reading a newspaper. Alan, without a word, handed him the card he had been given.

"Sit down, Mr. Austen," said the old man very politely.

"I am glad to make your acquaintance."

"Is it true," asked Alan, "that you have a certain mixture that has-er-quite extraordinary effects?"

"My dear sir," replied the old man, "my stock in trade is not very large-I don't deal in laxatives and teething mixtures-but such as it is, it is varied. I think nothing I sell has effects which could be precisely described as ordinary."

"Well, the fact is. . ." began Alan.

"Here, for example," interrupted the old man, reaching for a bottle from the shelf. "Here is a liquid as colourless as water, almost tasteless, quite imperceptible in coffee, wine, or any other beverage. It is also quite imperceptible to any known method of autopsy."

"Do you mean it is a poison?" cried Alan, very much horrified.

"Call it a glove-cleaner if you like," said the old man indifferently. "Maybe it will clean gloves. I have never tried. One might call it a life-cleaner. Lives need cleaning sometimes."

"What happens when you get protagonists on the international political scene with serious problems at home? In a word, trouble. Like the western media, these politicians got the Libya story wrong from day number 1, raising serious questions as to their capacity to perform in their positions.

Why, for instance, have the western media been caught lying about air strikes that never existed, about bombing of civilians when the buildings they were supposed to have bombed are still in pristine condition; why have there been stories about "Gaddafy" turning the full weight of his heavy weaponry against "unarmed civilians" when what we can see clearly is marauding gangs of terrorists and thugs committing acts of savagery, arson and wanton destruction?
Why have David Cameron, Hillary Clinton and Nicolas Sarkozy failed to mention - even once - the massacre of supporters of Muammar Al-Qathafi in Benghazi? Not one or two people, not soldiers, but no less than 212 (two hundred and twelve) unarmed civilians - these, yes, were indeed unarmed - in Benghazi (where else)? Murdered in cold blood.
Why have they failed to mention - even once - the origin of all the mercenaries fighting in Libya - not only to support the government forces but also fighting alongside the "rebels" from Benghazi - a separatist region. Britain and France both experienced long and bloody fights against separatists, in Northern Ireland, in Brittany, in Corsica.

Why have Cameron, Clinton and Sarkozy failed to mention the fact that the Libyan Government welcomes an international peace plan proposed by President Chavez of Venezuela and the setting up of an International Peace Commission, why have they failed to mention the fact that Muammar Al-Qathafi suggested that a team from the UN Human Rights Commission should come to Libya to make an investigation into what happened?

Why have they failed to mention the fact that Libya's oil wealth has been ploughed back into the economy, giving the Libyans the best standard of living in Africa, with the best human development indicators in the continent? Why have they failed to mention that before Al-Qathafi took over, Libya was officially the poorest country in the world, with per capita income at less than 50 USD a year?

Why have they failed to mention that Libyans have free housing, free healthcare and free education services? Have they implemented such policies in their countries? Why have they failed to mention that those who wish to set up a farm are given land for free, plus livestock, seeds and equipment - plus a farmhouse?

Let us be honest. On the domestic political front, Cameron, Clinton and Sarkozy want and need a Falklands, a Kosovo, an Afghanistan or an Iraq, they need to find a "tinpot dictator" who "oppresses his people" who is easy to isolate, to take the eyes off their own oppressive policies at home as they destroy the social fabric of their countries and render the futures of millions of young people hopeless.

Let us be honest, on the commercial front, their oil companies wish to renegotiate their contracts under their own terms - and not just in Libya, but in the whole of Africa. It is as one of the fathers of the African Union and one of the architects of African Unity where Al-Qathafy has angered the western vested commercial interests, so used to imperialistic and colonialist policies which saw Africa's resources going one way - their way.

Now that Al-Qathafi is trying to change that trend, he is called a monster and "has to be removed because he is a threat". THEY are the threat. They always have been."

"The Cancun Underwater Museum officially opened its doors on November 26, 2010, completing the exhibition titled “The Silent Evolution” by artist Jason de Caires Taylor. With 400 life-size sculptures submerged, this completed phase 2 of the world’s largest underwater museum, located in the beautiful waters of Cancun.

The National Park, located in Isla Mujeres Punta Cancun and Punta Nizuc welcomes approximately 750,000 tourists a year and is now home this impressive sculpture museum. Just days after almost all the sculptures were submerged, the welcoming they received by Mother Nature was amazing, with hundreds of swarming Gray Angel fish, that up until now, were rarely seen around the Manchones area.

The main gallery is formed by 400 life-size figures, based on real people. Its building required 18 months of hard work, 120 tons of cement, 400 kg of silicone, 3,800 glass fiber and more than 120 submarine work hours, as well as effort and dedication from a committed team with a dream, that began almost two years ago.

The technique, developed by the sculptor, allows the creation of life-size figures that keep the models original gestures and positions. The sinking process to more than 10 meters of depth consists on placing the sculptures over a 2 tons base, which will be positioned safely on rocky surfaces to avoid any damage caused by waves. The Underwater Museum can be appreciated not only from the bottom of the sea, all the pieces are placed in a way that looks like a human eye as seen from the air.

The first sinking took place on November 14^th, 2009. In the project’s first phase and under the supervision of the renowned artist and sub aquatic sculpture Jason deCaires Taylor, three sculptures were submerged: “Coleccionista de Sueños” (Dream Collector), “Hombre en llamas” (Man on Fire) and “La Jardinera de la Esperanza” (The Gardener of Hope). The sculptures were placed near the natural reefs and close to marine life habitats in order to create a natural ecosystem that helps maintain corals and reefs in the best conditions." A house is an energy devouring construction as it consumes considerable amount of energy in order to offer a cosy and comfort life to its owners. However, an extravagant and bad use of energy lead to over consumption and consequently to "swollen" bills. An efficient home management as well as operation are beneficial not only to our monthly savings but also to the environment. There are a good few simple tips that everyone of as can apply to their home in order to make it environmental friendly and cost effective as well.

Let us begin with house lighting which is the easiest way to conserve energy. Replacing our most frequently used light fixture or the bulbs in them with Energy Star qualified products we can save considerable amount of energy. Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) consume 75% less energy and last about 10 times longer than common incandescent lamps. They are more expensive than traditional light bulbs, but it only takes about 3 months to pay back the higher price in energy savings. Furthermore, we should always remember to switch off lights when leaving a room otherwise the above replacement of bulbs will be useless.

The installation of an air conditioning unit is critical choice too. We should bare in mind that a bigger unit doesn't always mean better. A reason is that oversizing can shorten the life of the equipment by switching it on and off more frequently than a properly sized unit. On the other hand, undersized units can reduce the efficiency and accelerate deterioration of system parts as a result of overuse. Additionally, ceiling fans can keep you cooler while reducing air conditioning operation about 40% in summer. Also in winter, they can save up to 10% in heating costs by circulating warm air from the ceiling to the floor. Moreover, on sunny winter days open curtains and let the sun in as it is a natural source of heat.

Along with air conditioning unit furnace plant is of great importance. A properly adjusted furnace consumes less energy and its life span is longer. Do not also forget to check its filter and change it every 1-2 months. It needn't any special knowledge, just read the users manual. According to statistics it uses about 40% less water and about 50% less energy. Remember always run both washing machine and dish washer in full load. Climate change is a serious global "infliction" which concerns every single human being. It is not a state's or country's or regional problem. It expands beyond borders reaching even the most remote areas on earth. It steps with us reacting to our daily activities.

Unfortunately, a variety of anthropogenic causes has brought about formidable environmental problems. In the last few decades, rapid and uncontrolled growth in developing countries like China, India and Brazil make things worse. Heavy industries such as steel mills, refineries and chemical plants have sprung up widely; consequently, an insatiable thirst for raw material and fossil fuels boosts overexploitation of the natural resources. Furthermore, the treatment of those materials sends out pollutants which act as "greenhouse gases" overburdening the atmosphere and contributing negatively to global warming.

Some of these pollutants gases are: Carbon dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), Nitrous oxide(N2O) and Industrial Gases such as Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), Perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6).

These gases allow sunlight to enter the atmosphere freely. When sunlight strikes the Earth’s surface, some of it is re-radiated back towards space as infrared radiation (heat). Greenhouse gases absorb this infrared radiation and trap its heat in the atmosphere. The past 150 years show an increase in greenhouse gases. Levels of several important greenhouse gases have increased by about 40% since large-scale industrialization began around 150 years ago. During the past 20 years, about three-quarters of human-caused (anthropogenic) emissions came from burning fossil fuels. Concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are naturally regulated by numerous processes collectively known as the "carbon cycle."

Scientists know with virtual certainty that increasing greenhouse gas concentrations tend to warm the planet.1 In computer-based models, rising concentrations of greenhouse gases produce an increase in the average surface temperature of the Earth over time. Rising temperatures may, in turn, produce changes in precipitation patterns, storm severity, and sea level commonly referred to as "climate change."

Assessments by the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) suggest that the Earth’s climate has warmed between 1.1° and 1.6°F over the past century and that human activity affecting the atmosphere is "very likely" an important driving factor.

When the Science serves animals

Alison is a lovely young turtle which suffered from a fierce shark attack resulting in the loss of her shell. She would have died at the age of five; however she is healthy and enjoys frolicking in the immense ocean. An artificial carbon shell was designed and fitted on Alison by specialists for her sustainability. Frequently it is adjusted as to conform with her growth. It is said that Alison will reach the age of around 150 and she will weigh about 272 kgr. Amazing...!!!

Beauty is a proud eagle. At the age of seven her beak was smashed because of a gun shot. Fortunately, Beauty still soars proudly into the skies. Her new beak was the outcome of a fruitful collaboration among veterinary surgeons, dentists and engineers. Thanks to that, she can ''stand on her feet'' strong enough to prey and feed herself. It is reckoned that Beauty will reach the age of 50.

Fuji is a cute dolphin. Unfortunately, Fuji was afflicted with cancer and lost his back-end. Without it he couldn't swim in order to reach the surface of the sea and breathe. His new contemporary and sophisticated back-end designed by the engineers of the well-known firm called 'Brigdestone'!! Once again he enjoys doing magnificent back flips over the water.

Molly is a pony which was abandoned during the hurricane Katrina. This wonderful pony was attacked by a pit bull; so consequently she lost her right foreleg. Doctors fitted an artificial limb to her.

Mosha is a baby male elephant. His foreleg was severed when he tried to cross a mine field.

Motala is a female elephant which also lost her foreleg in a mine field.

Stumpy is a kangaroo. A specially designed artificial hind leg with a suspension was fitted to her as to jump high once again...!

Tonka is a baby turtle which was attacked by a dog. Her three legs were severed. Now sitting on a skate Tonka is rolling faster than the other turtles...!

Unzoka is a female stork. She lost her beak due to human ''careless'' action. Neither could Unzoka feed herself nor drink water. After five operations a new beak was fitted to Unzoka.

Winter is a young male dolphin whose his back-end was severed after his encounter with a fish trap. Like Jugi, without it he can't swim and reach the surface so as to breathe. Thanks to human intervention Winter is now capable of doing much more...

I always remember the first time I saw you. It was five years ago. I was lying on my couch riffling through a moto-magazine. My glance was captured by a shinning picture. It was you...Your imposing beauty like a Circe bewitched my heart and my very soul. At once I felt a nibble deeply in my heart. I was feverishly in love with you from the very first moment. My dreams and thoughts were haunted by your magnificent image. Daily a fierce longing grew on me like a violent storm sweeps over the immense deep ocean. I wanted eagerly to touch and ride you.

After two days I visited the local store. I was standing bewildered and motionless behind the pane while I was gazing ecstatically at your frame. Your shape and lines were amazingly beautiful. Every part of your body was fabulous. I was repleted with high spirits.

The next day you were shinning parked in my yard. You were mine...all mine...!!! I turned the key and a smooth metallic sound brushed my ears like a morning breeze. It was your begging call...a call to ride you! I jumped on your seat and by turning the throttle I disappeared on the outskirts of town. I always recall our solitary excursions in the countryside. The odorous pure scents from the flowers and herbs made me get away from it all as I was gliding into an imaginary world.

And now like a wretch I want to...I dare not write even utter this word. My hand is trembling and my lips stifle the words. My heart is broken. Please forgive me, I can't help it...I have to sell you...

What happens when a man meddles with the nature ?

Reading the classic novel Frankenstein written by Mary Shelley the profound meaning of this horror story is easily understood. No human being, even the one who holds the ultimate knowledge can imitate the nature's transcendent laws of creativity.

Although it was first published in 1818, ''Frankenstein'' still constitutes a contemporary paradigm of humans' arrogance and pretension to surmount themselves and reach the divine nature. The side effects of a good many efforts are well known to every single one of us.

I have already watched the movie, however by reading this book I recollect animate horror scenes of it. Well, that's the main plot of the story concisely:

An ambitious as well as idealistic young scientist, Victor Frankenstein, versed in the science of natural philosophy has a dream, the accomplishment of a great enterprise, to create life. After many years of struggling and indefatigable work he finds the sparkle of life. He creates a manlike horrendous living being, so terrible and obnoxious that even he, his creator condemns it.

Rejected by his creator the monstrous creature roaming hopeless and endures the hardships and loathingness of an unknown hostile world. His distorted body frame and his fiendish appearance scares to death every human being. Utterly isolated and spurned the desperate hapless creature becomes exremely cruel and determined to revenge his creator.

The time I chose to walk 'The Road Not Taken' was fourteen years ago. I had just graduate from high school, therefore I had to make a decision about my future. Unfortunately, I had failed to enter university so I had two choices. The former, my parents' expectation, was to study abroad at a foreign university, a commonplace choice. The latter, was to follow the immense deep blue, the road of the sea.

I chose the second one as the sea had already captured my heart and soul so I was eagerly waiting to dive in her deep blue hug. I was aware of the difficulties but that was why I made such a choice. I knew that seamen live a harsh and remote life far from their families, beloved friends and comforts.

However, I chose to sacrifice all these and turned my life in a different distinct direction. Although my parents tried to change my mind, I didn't back down as I had already made my decision.

Moreover, I had heard rousing as well as exciting stories about seamen. My uncle, an old salt, always recited vivid adventurous stories concerning his life in the sea every time he came back home. Narrations about exotic places, different countries, cultures, traditions and people strengthen my will and fed my imagination. My love for the sea grew on me and soared after my first educational voyage while I was at Marine University. Her bewitching beauty had already stolen my very soul.

Nevertheless every so often I wonder how my life would be if I had made a different choice. I spent my youth into the oceans all around the world; however, I never regret. I have acquired beautiful memories and valuable experiences all these years.

All in all, although I feel nostalgia and remorse during my lonely voyages on the sea, if I was given a second chance to make a decision I would choose to walk the same road...

I am of the opinion that success is a happy life. To keep a balance between our professional ambitions and personal life, otherwise we have to sacrifice one of these two. For instance, the ultimate chase and achievement of professional glory and wealth may lead to internal emptiness and loneliness.

Now what about failure...

Well, almost everyone has experienced a misfortune or failure in their lives. The point is to emerge stronger and more decisive as to fulfill our aspirations and do not plunge ourselves into dismay and sadness. Furthermore, there are no losers but only people without dreams and will to achieve them.

Frequently we observe on the blue skies a subtle lined layer of ''gasses'' or what ever it is, almost every time an aircraft crosses the sky at a certain altitude. Have you ever wondered about these ''gasses'' ? What are they? Are they harmful or a natural phenomenon?

There are two types of these ''gasses'' called the Contrail and Chemtrails.

In simple words contrails (an abbreviation for condensation trail) are visible trails of condensed water vapour made by the exhaust of aircraft engines. Depending on atmospheric conditions, contrails may be visible for only a few seconds or minutes, or may persist for many hours. Read more here.

The term chemtrail is derived from ''chemical trail''. It does not refer to common forms of aerial spraying such as crop dusting, cloud seeding or aerial firefighting. The term specifically refers to aerial trails allegedly caused by the systematic high-altitude release of chemical substances not found in ordinary contrails, resulting in the appearance of supposedly uncharacteristic sky tracks. Believers of these theory speculate that the purpose of the chemical release may be for global dimming, population control, weather control, or bio warfare and claim that these trails are causing respiratory illnesses and other health problem. Reading an English book is an enchanting and entertaining way to brush up on English. Recently, I set off reading ''The Shadow of the Wind'', a novel written by Carlos Ruiz Zafon.

The gripping plot is set in post - civil war Barcelona (Spain). The protagonist is a young boy named Daniel, son of a bookseller, who was left orphan at an early age by his mother. One day Daniel's father took him to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, a secret labyrinth library of old forgotten books. According to a tradition, everyone enters in this sanctuary is allowed to choose a book and must protect it with their lives.

The young boy discerns a dusty spine of a book called ''The Shadow of the Wind'' by Julian Carax. Daniel takes the book at home where barricaded in his room and captivated by the story's spell he reads it to the end. Impressed by the unknown author Daniel sets off searching for other books but finds none. While he is searching for traces as far as the elusive author is concerned Daniel comes across with a strange mysterious man called Lain Courbert who offers him a fortune as to buy the book.

Loyal to his oath Daniel denies to sell the book. Discontented by Daniel's decision the mysterious man threatens him. The frightened lad returns ''The Shadow of the Wind'' to the sanctuary and conceals it among the others books. However, he continues seeking the intriguing story of the elusive author. In doing so Daniel unfolds the tangle of an interesting story...

World Environment Day

The natural world supports a bewildering number of life forms living in absolute harmony with their environment. Unfortunately, there is only one species, the human species, which through its activities wreak havoc on this ''earthly paradise''.

What on ''earth'' have we done...??

The earth is breathing stertorously. It is pale and faint, for our continuous ghastly overexploitation has overwhelmed it. The time limits narrowed down. We must act in a purposeful and resolute way. Everyone of us thinks green but how many live a green life. It is easy to think green, however, we have to apply our though. In addition the more we think, the less we act. The environment needs our action not our pompous words and hollow promises. I know that it is difficult to change our daily habits, but we have to as there is no alternative.

Moreover the governments all around the world should motivate their citizens to embark on a green way of life. Everyone has the will to act, however, there is a lack of impulses and education about environmental manners. A case in point is my country Greece. I know many people who want to use bicycles for their daily activities, but unfortunately they are afraid , for there are no special facilities like cycle paths to support their will. Furthermore the deliberate ignorance and heedlessness of other drivers set their life in danger.

As you can see we have the will but no means. The only thing we need is a spark to light a green fire and melt our glacial indifference.

Animal Abuse

Frequently, we use the expression ''You are an animal'' in case of characterizing somebody's cruel action. As I see it I think that something is wrong with this expression, isn't it?
Considering the facts from the video below I 'm incline to believe that we should substitute the world ''animal'' by the world ''human''!!
''You are a human'' that is what animals would say!
Hardly can I understand what drives some people to this atrocity.

Generally an action considered as wrong whether there is a relevant punishment. Unfortunately, although each state has enacted appropriate legislation as to prevent animals from abusing, these laws blatantly ignored.

It goes without saying that each animal is a live creature and not a mean to burst our anger or cruelty on it. It feels pain, anger, fear and happiness so we should treat it with care and love.

Finally as Mahatma Gandhi said, the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.

Beach Litter

As the seasons pass by the summer is around the corner once again. Undoubtedly, Greece is surrounded by amazingly beautiful beaches. Thousands of people, tourists and local population, visit them even the most the remotest ones looking for a cool place throughout the summer.

However, sadly enough, this infestation of people reveals once again our appalling habit. Litter...Litter...Litter everywhere!!! It is a fact that a few years ago people living in coastal areas could enjoy the sea near them, while nowadays they often have to travel a long way to find a clean beach and sea. Unfortunately, a considerable length of coast line has been transformed into tips due to our unconsciousness. It is a disgusting sight to see!!!

This simple fact undeniably leads to the conclusion that we may have progressed material-wise, but haplessly not yet in a ''sustainable'' way...

There are two options:

!!!...a litter-swim...!!! OR !!!...swimming in paradise...!!!

Earth Day 2009

The continual rape of Mother Earth as to achieve our greedy aspirations and extinguish our materialistic thirst has led to a terrible habitat loss. Hardly a day goes by without the media reporting that certain species of plants and animals are on the verge of extinction.

We must realize that our survival on this beautiful planet depends on these amazing plants and animals. It is our major duty to protect and pass on to the next generations this ponderous heritage.

The Earth needs our help in order to continue her amazing journey in the immense galaxy. We have to hear her voice and recognize her signs before the situation goes down to the wire.

Let's change our habits and adopt a green way of life.....

Unite For Hunger And Hope

Poverty constitues a terribble social affliction. Accorging to statistics about 500 million people are living in complete poverty and more than 15 million children die of hunger every year. These tremendous numbers lay bare the harsh reality of life in the poor countries around the world.

Million of marginalized people or differently second class citizens suffer from famine and drought and live in slums under extremely squalid conditions. Infant mortality soars exponentialy due to these unanitary conditions and lack of vaccination. Diseases like malaria, flu and tuberculosis wipe out this susceptible and helpless categories of people.

However, I am inclined to believe that it is in our interest and good-will to alleviate this situation. A simple donation of each individual can save a human life. Considering that the donation of 1$ can feed 4 children, think of how many of them can be saved. In addition, collective actions and protests against world poverty and hunger, two afflictions which always go together, can ''defrost'' the glaciar indifference of world leaders and governments as to lend a hand on this fight. Huge amounts of money are spent by them on military purposes and grants in order to prop up giant foundations, something which is totally poinless.

In a nutshell, think of what will be happen if they donate a minuscule fraction of this amount to irrigate areas such as camps or support charitable organizations. How many lives would be saved ?

All together, we can put an end to this plague once and for all...

Vote Earth Because It's Our Planet

On March 28 at 08:30-09:30 we have the opportunity to show that we still care and love this amazing and unique planet...our home. The only thing we have to do is to switch off our lights for one hour, simply that! Switching off our lights is a vote for Earth, instead leaving them on is a vote for global warming. The World Wildlife Federation (WWF) are impelling people all over the world to Vote Earth and reach the main goal of this purpose which is to gather one billion votes. The results of this open vote will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference which is to be held in Copenhagen on December 2009. In this meeting the world leaders will set down policies and actions against global warming. Therefore every single vote of each individual will play an instrumental role to materialize the main target of one billion votes.

It is easy for everyone to realize the significance of such an effort to make our voice heard vociferously and stand up to climate change. It is a responsibility for each individual to help the earth recover from our greedy and harsh exploitation. Also, we must understand that this planet does not constitute humans' property. A vast variety of other life forms inhabits on earth and without these our survival is fragile.

This worldwide collective try may trigger ourselves to change habits and adopt a different angle as far as the environment is concerned. We have the duty to pass on the next generations a healthy and greener planet.

The above event is a part of a traditional ritual which leads a young man to enter manhood. This ''tradition'' constitutes a major atrocious crime against Calderon, a friendly and intelligent dolphin which favors human companion. What an amazing way to show their daring!!!

The introduction of invasive marine species into new environments by ships’ ballast water, attached to ships’ hulls and via other vectors has been identified as one of the four greatest threats to the world’s oceans. The other three are land-based sources of marine pollution, overexploitation of living marine resources and physical alteration/destruction of marine habitat.

Shipping moves over 80% of the world’s commodities and transfers approximately 3 to 5 billion tonnes of ballast water internationally each year. A similar volume may also be transferred domestically within countries and regions each year. Ballast water is absolutely essential to the safe and efficient operation of modern shipping, providing balance and stability to un-laden ships. However, it may also pose a serious ecological, economic and health threat. A potentially serious environmental problem arises when this ballast water contains marine life.

Invasive marine species are one of the four greatest threats to the world’s oceans! Unlike other forms of marine pollution, such as oil spills, where ameliorative action can be taken and from which the environment will eventually recover, the impacts of invasive marine species are most often irreversible!

It is my belief that teachers constitute the foundations of the educational system. They implel young people to dive in the exciting world of education. In consequence, their educational methods should carefully be considered. If I was given the choice I would prefer to be a lenient teacher instead of a strict one so I do not agree with the above statement. The stated reasons below explain my preference.

The first reason is that a teacher should create a lively as well as lovely environment as to stimulate students' interest and get them into a compelling world. In addtion, she/he should invest new methods of teaching and keep them alert and eager to learn more. For example, when I was in high school my teacher in chemistry always conducted appealing experiments to maintain our interest in this difficult lesson.

Another reason is that nowadays children spend a considerable amount of time at school and other educational institutions so a teacher should be close and advise them. There are many ''attractive'' dangers such as drugs, smoking, alcohol which could misguide a child. Hence, a teacher should politely reach students and explain the negative aspects of these things.

On the other hand, a stiff and adamant teacher discourage the susceptible young students to conserve their interest in education. Children spontaneously adopt a negative attitude and abhor any lesson related to the arrogant and strict teacher or professor. For example, my teacher in Latin was an appalling person who always talked down to students so I usually came up with a good reason to miss the class.

On the whole, a teacher, through her/his educational methods, should inspire and motivate students to reach a high level of education. The best path to achieve this is in a polite and lenient way.

From ancient times up to now education has been considered as one of the most valuable goods. It constitutes the ambrosia of our brain and cultivates out mind and soul. I am inclined to believe that education should be offered free for every human being for these reasons.

First of all private education builds up olliteracy. Poor people and three or more child families cannot afford the extremely high funds of private institutions. These susceptible categories are eager to learn and they have an earnest desire to be educated. Unfortunately, they do not have money to accomplish their dream and remain uneducated. By this way illiteracy soars exponentially.

Moreover, as illiteracy grows a nation loses its identity and civilization. An uneducated society can be easily manipulated and exploited by any government. In addition, this situation holds back the arts, technology and economy. Therefore, every human should have equal rights to education and government should support it as to be accessible to all.

On the other hand, free colleges and universities create an intellectual society. Also, it help a nation to flourish and reach at a high level of knowledge. A multifaceted free education enhances our consciousness and paves the road for a better world.

All in all, governments around the world should adopt a free educational system accessible to everyone. Free knowledge is a treasured good and must be pursued by every means.

Black History Month

This month is celebrated worldwide from many countries as the month of Black History. I think that it is sounds extremely prejudiced. Is it possible to confine the history of hundreds of years splattered with blood and grief in one single month??
What about the others?? Do they belong to the white race??
History does not need to be stained by any kind of ''colour''. There is only one history the History of Human Race.
I am inclined to agree with Morgan Freeman that this is a ridiculous and also belittling discrimination.

The Mediterranean Sea: "Let's Change Habits... Not the Climate!"

Following invitation of "Plan Bleu", a regional activity center of the Mediterranean Action Plan of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP/MAP) and in its capacity as partner to UNEP/MAP, HELMEPA, participated in a 2-day Regional Seminar held on October 22 and 23 in Marseille, France.

Participants from all Mediterranean countries, representing the scientific and policy making communities, together with representatives of the EC-DG for the Environment, UNEP, European Environment Agency, Global Environmental Facility and NGOs gathered in order to define climate change in the Mediterranean for the coming years, to identify its impact and discuss possible measures for mitigation.
During the Seminar, an overview of how climate change will influence the human activity from tourism to agriculture, fishing, coastal systems and health, was presented.
The facts are alarming. The Med is a "hot spot".
According to the IPCC report, the Mediterranean is one of the regions where the environment will be most affected by global warming. Climate experts from the French Society of Meteorology/National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) analyzed the forecasts for the Mediterranean. Temperatures are set to rise by 3-4 degrees Celsius, salinity will increase, river run off will decrease, there will be a change in season behavior, 30 millions hectares are threatened by desertification, continental droughts and more extreme events will take place by 2100.
The increase of the temperature will have a direct impact on biodiversity, sea level rise, water resource and health. The sea level rise will damage fish habitats; there will be jelly fish outbreaks, a decrease in cold water species in coldest areas, an expansion of invasive species, and emergence of pathogens which altogether will threaten the food quality and quantity. A decrease of 30% is expected in the production of ecosystems. Oceans and seas will suffer from acidification, the land from erosion; there will also be a decrease of forests and an increase in fires due to the rise of temperature... The negative effects will know no boundaries.
Countries like Albania, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Syria and Turkey, presented the impacts already felt as well as measures taken, i.e. R&D programs, encouraging public transport, use of biofuels, management of animal waste, etc. But, Mediterranean countries in the south have very few ongoing projects even though their potential is much higher.
Several contacts for future cooperation were made during the Seminar, both with Plan Bleu staff and representatives from Mediterranean countries, where discussions were focused on the possibility of creation of new MEPAs throughout the region to foster synergies.
Nonetheless, this Seminar left many questions unanswered; there are still many things to do. There must be greater cooperation between Mediterranean countries but also beyond. There is a need to do something concrete, rapidly efficient as there are financial means available. There is a wide consensus for the need for regional cooperation, for an information system, indicators regarding climate change and have full participation of scientists, politicians and NGOs. Plan Bleu is willing, together with the Mediterranean Commission for Sustainable Development to organize regularly at the Mediterranean level conferences and seminars to exchange good practices methods and evaluate impacts.
One thing remains certain, the Mediterranean countries must act rapidly if this fragile region, sharing seas with three continents is to survive with its diversity and richness. And towards this challenge we all have also an opportunity to set an example.
The seminar as well as the climatic changes we are all witnessing day-in and day-out justify HELMEPA's moto: "Let's Change Habits... Not the Climate!"

Recently, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources has been seeking 75 volunteers to be trained in listening to frogs so that the state can complete its annual frog survey. Georgia has 31 frog species, each with distinctive ribbits and croaks, and surveyors, after practicing detection, will monitor frog habitats to help officials measure population trends. International Voluntary Coastal Cleanup Day 2008 in Greece

Disregarding the rain and the cold prevailing across the country on 20 September 2008, 2006 volunteers of all ages participated in the International Coastal Cleanup Day and cleaned a total of 47 km of beaches, seas, sea bed, lakes and rivers. With their participation, the volunteers reminded the responsibility of ALL to keep the beaches and seas of our country clean.

The volunteers filled 1,686 big garbage bags with litter weighting 15 tons, and filled in HELMEPA data cards with all the items they found, including "rare objects" such as armchairs and toilet seats!!!

Once again, the findings show the close relation between the human behavior and litter. Some 89% of the litter comes from garbage left on the beaches. The 47% are from recreational activities, 42% from smoking, 10% from activities at sea and 1% unfortunately, from personal hygiene and medical objects.

It is our responsibility to keep our planet - our home - clean. Our treatment towards to environment is the mirror of our culture and civilization not only as a nation but also as human beings. We must realize that, we are not the only habitants on this planet. Thousands of other species flourish on this amazing planet and without these our survival is impossible. They can survive without us but we cannot!!!

Now and then our behavior shows that we constitute the '' worse litter '' on this planet and it will ends up with our disposal...
